Dr. Susan Huang\, will discuss “Evidence for Reducing Infections\, Hospitalizations\, and Antibiotic Resistant Pathogens in Nursing Homes through Universal Nasal Decolonization & Bathing with Chlorhexidine.” \nSusan Huang\, MD\, MPH\, is a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Health Policy Research Institute at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine\, and the medical director of epidemiology and infection prevention at UC Irvine Health. Dr. Huang studies healthcare-associated infections with a focus on multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). She was a member of the NIH Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory for Pragmatic Clinical Trials to prevent MRSA disease and other healthcare-associated infections. She also studies the regional prevention of MDROs in hospitals and nursing homes through epidemiologic studies as well as simulation models. Dr. Bynum received her medical and public health degrees from Johns Hopkins\, completed her residency and chief residency at Dartmouth\, and completed specialty training in Geriatric Medicine back at Johns Hopkins. She leads interdisciplinary research teams to study questions about the complex drivers of quality and costs for older adults and how to improve health care policy and performance using national administrative data. Dr. Bynum has been an Atlantic Philanthropies Health & Aging Policy Fellow\, was a member of the National Academy of Medicine Committee that published “Vital Signs: Core Metrics for Health and Health Care Progress”\, and was recently a deputy editor of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, November 16 at 12pm ET with Dr. Michael Harhay who will be presenting on the “Outcomes truncated by death in randomized trials.” \nMichael Harhay\, PhD\, MPH\, leads a research program that develops statistical methods\, study designs\, and outcome measures to improve studies for patients with critical and severe illnesses. As director of the NIH and PCORI-funded Clinical Trials Methods and Outcomes Lab at the University of Pennsylvania’s Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center\, his team is particularly focused on developing and using causal inference and Bayesian statistical methods to better design and analyze pragmatic and cluster-randomized trials for these patient populations. He has contributed to a wide range of trial methodology areas\, including informatively missing or truncated data\, estimand refinement\, Bayesian trial applications\, small-sample corrections\, and making the best use of baseline covariate information. In 2022\, he joined the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit as the Director of Statistical Evaluation\, where he applies these methods to studies in Penn’s health system. Dr. Harhay currently serves as a deputy editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and an associate editor of the International Journal of Epidemiology. Dr. Courtright’s research aims to improve the effectiveness\, efficiency\, and equity of palliative care delivery for people living with serious illnesses. Her research combines insights from the fields of predictive\, behavioral\, and implementation sciences to develop and test novel interventions in large\, embedded\, pragmatic trials that systematically promote timely primary and specialist palliative care for patients most likely to benefit. By leveraging hybrid pragmatic trial designs\, Dr. Courtright’s work further elucidates key implementation contextual factors at multiple levels within a health care system to facilitate interpretation and dissemination of trial findings. Dr. Courtright graduated from Temple University School of Medicine\, completed her internal medicine residency and a chief residency at the University of Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, September 21 at 12pm ET with Dr. James Flory who will be presenting on the “Decision Architecture Randomization Trials: Extremely Low-Cost Trials with Preservation of Clinician and Patient Choice.” \nDr. James Flory is an endocrinologist and clinical epidemiologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center\, specializing in the management of hyperglycemia and diabetes in cancer patients. Dr. Flory’s research career began with a pre-doctoral fellowship in bioethics at the NIH\, where his work on ethical and logistical challenges to traditional randomized controlled trials led him to become very interested in alternative clinical research approaches\, especially observational studies. Much of his subsequent career has focused on the application of observational study methodologies to answer comparative effectiveness questions\, supported by funding from AHRQ\, NIH\, and PCORI. His research has largely focused on diabetes care\, particularly around metformin use\, and he was part of a successful effort to revise the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) label for metformin to make it accessible to hundreds of thousands of patients for whom it had been inappropriately contraindicated. In recent years\, Dr. Flory’s research has increasingly focused on the intersection of diabetes and cancer treatment\, with a particular focus on supportive care in patients with hyperglycemia in the setting of breast and pancreatic cancer. His major research focus now is a PCORI-funded methods development project to work on a novel pragmatic trial design called a Decision Architecture Randomization Trial (DART). DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, February 16 at 12pm ET with Dr. Li who will be presenting on the “Methods for Designing Cluster Randomized Trials to Detect Treatment Effect Heterogeneity.” \nFan Li\, PhD\, is an assistant professor in the Department of Biostatistics at Yale School of Public Health\, and faculty member in the Center for Methods in Implementation and Prevention Science and the Yale Center for Analytical Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in biostatistics from Duke University in May 2019\, and joined the Yale Biostatistics faculty in July 2019. His main expertise is in the development of methods for designing and analyzing pragmatic cluster randomized trials\, causal inference for randomized trials and observational studies\, and techniques for improving internal and external validity for treatment comparison under different study designs. He is the Principal Investigator of a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)-funded methods award that investigates new study planning methods and software for testing treatment effect heterogeneity in cluster randomized trials. His research has also been supported by several additional PCORI-funded and NIH-funded awards. Dr. Li is currently an Executive Committee member of the Design and Statistics Core at the NIA IMPACT Collaboratory. From 2008 to 2013 Charles co-led a collaboration that produced the first international ethics guidelines for cluster randomized trials. His current work explores ethical issues in pragmatic randomized controlled trials that evaluate health interventions in real-world conditions to better inform patients\, health providers and health systems managers. Charles led the writing team for the World Health Organization guidance on “Ethical Considerations for Health Policy and Systems Research\,” published in 2019. In 2020\, he served on the WHO Working Group for Guidance on Human Challenge Studies in COVID-19. He is currently a member of the Peruvian National Academy of Medicine Committee on Clinical Trials in Lower- and Middle-Income Countries. Dr. Williams will be presenting on “CHATO design\, pilot testing and update on current implementation and results.” \nKristine Williams\, PhD\, RN\, is a nurse gerontologist whose program of research includes multiple contributions leading to improved nursing care for older adults by enhancing nurse-patient communication\, providing cognitive training to improve self-care for older adults\, and by using technology to link family caregivers of persons with dementia to expert in-home guidance using video telehealth technology. She has used clinical trials to develop and test innovative interventions directly applicable to care settings that improve outcomes for older adults and their families across long term service and support settings. Dr. Williams has received continuous NIH funding since an R03 in 2005 followed by multiple K12\, CTSA\, R21\, R34\, R61 and R01 studies. Kimberly Johnson\, MD\, will discuss “Embedding Health Equity in a Cluster Randomized Trial of an Advance Care Planning Intervention.” \nDate/Time: April 21\, 2022 from 12pm – 1pm ET\nSpeaker: \n\nKimberly Johnson\, MD\nProfessor of Medicine and Director of the Duke Center for Research to Advance Healthcare Equity\, Duke Health \nKimberly Johnson\, MD\,  is a clinical investigator nationally known for her research on racial disparities in palliative care for older adults. Her work has identified multi-domain and multi-level factors\, which are associated with racial disparities in the quality of palliative care for African Americans. This includes differences in patterns of care between older African American and White patients enrolled in hospice; racial variation in knowledge\, beliefs\, and attitudes toward hospice and palliative care; geographic variation in racial disparities in hospice use; and organizational factors associated with greater use of hospice care by older African Americans. Dr. Johnson has led large national studies of hospice providers\, and multi-site studies of academic and community-based organizations to reduce racial disparities and improve the quality of palliative care delivery for older African Americans. Dr. Johnson is the director of the Duke Center for Research to Advance Healthcare Equity (REACH Equity). She serves as a co-investigator on CAPC’s project\, Equitable Access to Quality Palliative Care for Black Patients: A Scan of Challenges and Opportunities.
