DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, November 16 at 12pm ET with Dr. Michael Harhay who will be presenting on the “Outcomes truncated by death in randomized trials.” \nMichael Harhay\, PhD\, MPH\, leads a research program that develops statistical methods\, study designs\, and outcome measures to improve studies for patients with critical and severe illnesses. As director of the NIH and PCORI-funded Clinical Trials Methods and Outcomes Lab at the University of Pennsylvania’s Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center\, his team is particularly focused on developing and using causal inference and Bayesian statistical methods to better design and analyze pragmatic and cluster-randomized trials for these patient populations. He has contributed to a wide range of trial methodology areas\, including informatively missing or truncated data\, estimand refinement\, Bayesian trial applications\, small-sample corrections\, and making the best use of baseline covariate information. In 2022\, he joined the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit as the Director of Statistical Evaluation\, where he applies these methods to studies in Penn’s health system. Dr. Harhay currently serves as a deputy editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and an associate editor of the International Journal of Epidemiology. DESCRIPTION:IMPACT multiple principal investigator Vincent Mor\, PhD and colleagues will hold a workshop entitled “The Long-Term Care Data Cooperative: Leveraging Nursing Home Electronic Health Records for Research\,” at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting on November 8\, 2023. \nThe Long-Term Care Data Cooperative is funded by the National Institute of Aging and aims to improve the quality of care within skilled nursing facilities by compiling the most comprehensive electronic health records data on nursing home residents nationwide. This data can be linked to Medicare claims and includes over 2\,100 nursing homes\, 386\,000 residents\, 6.7 million distinct patient diagnoses\, 12.4 million medication prescriptions\, 300 million medication administrations\, 550\,000 vaccination records\, and 290 million vital signs observations. \nThe interactive workshop will enable attendees to learn how the LTC Data Cooperative is generating real-world evidence on treatments and care practices. They will receive access to explore sample data\, gain a comprehensive understanding of the core data model\, and learn how to request access for research purposes. DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, October 19 at 12pm ET with Dr. Katherine Courtright who will be presenting on the “Electronic Nudges and Pragmatic Trials to Improve Hospital Palliative Care Delivery.” \nKatherine (Kate) Courtright\, MD\, MSHP\, is an assistant professor of medicine and a core faculty member at the Palliative and Advanced Illness Research (PAIR) Center at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Courtright’s research aims to improve the effectiveness\, efficiency\, and equity of palliative care delivery for people living with serious illnesses. Her research combines insights from the fields of predictive\, behavioral\, and implementation sciences to develop and test novel interventions in large\, embedded\, pragmatic trials that systematically promote timely primary and specialist palliative care for patients most likely to benefit. By leveraging hybrid pragmatic trial designs\, Dr. Courtright’s work further elucidates key implementation contextual factors at multiple levels within a health care system to facilitate interpretation and dissemination of trial findings. Dr. Courtright graduated from Temple University School of Medicine\, completed her internal medicine residency and a chief residency at the University of Pennsylvania. She remained at Penn for fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care hospice and palliative medicine\, and earned a master’s degree in health policy research. SUMMARY:Grand Rounds: James Flory\, MD\, MSCE | Decision Architecture Randomization Trials: Extremely Low-Cost Trials with Preservation of Clinician and Patient Choice
DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, September 21 at 12pm ET with Dr. James Flory who will be presenting on the “Decision Architecture Randomization Trials: Extremely Low-Cost Trials with Preservation of Clinician and Patient Choice.” \nDr. James Flory is an endocrinologist and clinical epidemiologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center\, specializing in the management of hyperglycemia and diabetes in cancer patients. Dr. Flory’s research career began with a pre-doctoral fellowship in bioethics at the NIH\, where his work on ethical and logistical challenges to traditional randomized controlled trials led him to become very interested in alternative clinical research approaches\, especially observational studies. Much of his subsequent career has focused on the application of observational study methodologies to answer comparative effectiveness questions\, supported by funding from AHRQ\, NIH\, and PCORI. His research has largely focused on diabetes care\, particularly around metformin use\, and he was part of a successful effort to revise the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) label for metformin to make it accessible to hundreds of thousands of patients for whom it had been inappropriately contraindicated. In recent years\, Dr. Flory’s research has increasingly focused on the intersection of diabetes and cancer treatment\, with a particular focus on supportive care in patients with hyperglycemia in the setting of breast and pancreatic cancer. His major research focus now is a PCORI-funded methods development project to work on a novel pragmatic trial design called a Decision Architecture Randomization Trial (DART). DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, February 16 at 12pm ET with Dr. Li who will be presenting on the “Methods for Designing Cluster Randomized Trials to Detect Treatment Effect Heterogeneity.” \nFan Li\, PhD\, is an assistant professor in the Department of Biostatistics at Yale School of Public Health\, and faculty member in the Center for Methods in Implementation and Prevention Science and the Yale Center for Analytical Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in biostatistics from Duke University in May 2019\, and joined the Yale Biostatistics faculty in July 2019. His main expertise is in the development of methods for designing and analyzing pragmatic cluster randomized trials\, causal inference for randomized trials and observational studies\, and techniques for improving internal and external validity for treatment comparison under different study designs. He is the Principal Investigator of a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)-funded methods award that investigates new study planning methods and software for testing treatment effect heterogeneity in cluster randomized trials. His research has also been supported by several additional PCORI-funded and NIH-funded awards. Dr. Li is currently an Executive Committee member of the Design and Statistics Core at the NIA IMPACT Collaboratory.
