DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, October 19 at 12pm ET with Dr. Katherine Courtright who will be presenting on the “Electronic Nudges and Pragmatic Trials to Improve Hospital Palliative Care Delivery.” \nKatherine (Kate) Courtright\, MD\, MSHP\, is an assistant professor of medicine and a core faculty member at the Palliative and Advanced Illness Research (PAIR) Center at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Courtright’s research aims to improve the effectiveness\, efficiency\, and equity of palliative care delivery for people living with serious illnesses. Her research combines insights from the fields of predictive\, behavioral\, and implementation sciences to develop and test novel interventions in large\, embedded\, pragmatic trials that systematically promote timely primary and specialist palliative care for patients most likely to benefit. By leveraging hybrid pragmatic trial designs\, Dr. Courtright’s work further elucidates key implementation contextual factors at multiple levels within a health care system to facilitate interpretation and dissemination of trial findings. Dr. Courtright graduated from Temple University School of Medicine\, completed her internal medicine residency and a chief residency at the University of Pennsylvania. She remained at Penn for fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care hospice and palliative medicine\, and earned a master’s degree in health policy research. SUMMARY:Grand Rounds: James Flory\, MD\, MSCE | Decision Architecture Randomization Trials: Extremely Low-Cost Trials with Preservation of Clinician and Patient Choice
DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, September 21 at 12pm ET with Dr. James Flory who will be presenting on the “Decision Architecture Randomization Trials: Extremely Low-Cost Trials with Preservation of Clinician and Patient Choice.” \nDr. James Flory is an endocrinologist and clinical epidemiologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center\, specializing in the management of hyperglycemia and diabetes in cancer patients. Dr. Flory’s research career began with a pre-doctoral fellowship in bioethics at the NIH\, where his work on ethical and logistical challenges to traditional randomized controlled trials led him to become very interested in alternative clinical research approaches\, especially observational studies. Much of his subsequent career has focused on the application of observational study methodologies to answer comparative effectiveness questions\, supported by funding from AHRQ\, NIH\, and PCORI. His research has largely focused on diabetes care\, particularly around metformin use\, and he was part of a successful effort to revise the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) label for metformin to make it accessible to hundreds of thousands of patients for whom it had been inappropriately contraindicated. In recent years\, Dr. Flory’s research has increasingly focused on the intersection of diabetes and cancer treatment\, with a particular focus on supportive care in patients with hyperglycemia in the setting of breast and pancreatic cancer. His major research focus now is a PCORI-funded methods development project to work on a novel pragmatic trial design called a Decision Architecture Randomization Trial (DART). DESCRIPTION:Numerous IMPACT members are presenting at the full AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting (ARM) conference along with pre-conference workshops and seminars in Seattle\, Washington from Saturday June 23 through Tuesday\, June 27. \nIf you would like to register for a pre-conference workshop in addition to ARM\, please do so through the main ARM registration page. \nHowever\, registration for the full ARM meeting is not required to attend a pre-conference workshop. \nOf note\, the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory is partnering with AcademyHealth to offer a 1.5 day pre-conference workshop from June 23-24. The workshop\, “Driving Tomorrow’s Outcomes Through Clinical Research in Real-World Settings: Essentials of Embedded Pragmatic Clinical Trials Workshop\,” will provide an introduction to the investigative opportunities for embedded health systems research\, along with strategies for conducting clinical trials that provide real-world evidence necessary to inform both practice and policy. Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to participate in facilitated\, hands-on learning activities and to interact with Principal Investigators of current and past embedded pragmatic clinical trials (ePCTs). \nFirsthand ePCT experiences and case studies from the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory will support and illustrate the topics presented and demonstrate how ePCTs in real-world settings are driving tomorrow’s outcomes. DESCRIPTION:Join us for IMPACT Grand Rounds on Thursday\, June 15 at 12pm ET with Dr. Ab Brody who will be presenting on the “Results and lessons learned from the Hospice Advanced Dementia Symptom Management and Quality of Life (HAS-QOL) embedded pragmatic clinical trial .” \nAb Brody\, PhD\, RN\, FAAN\, is the Pilot Core Lead of the NIA IMPACT Collaboratory and faculty at the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing and NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He works at the intersection of geriatrics\, palliative care\, quality and equity. The primary goal of his research\, clinical\, and policy pursuits is to improve the quality of care for older adults with serious illnesses generally\, and AD/ADRD specifically\, wherever they reside. The HAS-QOL Trial was a 25-site ePCT of a quality improvement program specifically tailored to improve care for persons living with dementia and their care partners receiving hospice across care settings. SUMMARY:CASI Dementia Palliative Care Clinical Trials Training Program Applications Due
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Aging and Serious Illness Dementia Palliative Care Clinical Trials Training Program provides a foundation in practical aspects involving the design and conduct of randomized clinical trials in dementia palliative care. The Program is appropriate for early career researchers or other mid-career researchers interested in developing competence in the planning\, design\, and execution of randomized clinical trials among persons with Alzheimer’s Disease or Related Dementias (ADRD) and their caregivers. The 10-month-long Program includes a combination of virtual small group sessions and a 5-day in-person Institute where learners will work together to design a trial and learners will develop their own grant application addressing ADRD. The research training team includes a diverse group of faculty members who are dedicated to developing investigators in dementia palliative care clinical trials research. \nThe Institute is scheduled for October 2 – 6\, 2023 in Chapel Hill\, North Carolina. It is critical that the candidate be able to attend the Institute in its entirety. To be eligible\, participants must be US citizens\, have a doctoral-level degree\, and be at least two years from their terminal degree with a demonstrated commitment to geriatric palliative care or dementia research. Thomas\, PhD\, is an associate professor of Health Services\, Policy and Practice\, and a Research Health Science Specialist at the Providence VA Medical Center’s Center of Innovation for Long-term Services and Supports. Dr. Thomas’ research focuses on identifying ways to improve the quality of life of older adults needing long-term services and supports (LTSS) through applied health services research.
