The iLibrary provides ongoing documentation of telehealth interventions for care partners of people living with dementia. All interventions in this resource were tested in a randomized controlled trial, contained at least one outcome for care partners and at least one synchronous interaction between an interventionist and the care partner. As investigators seek to develop, test, and implement care partner interventions over the phone and/or internet, understanding the landscape of prior interventions can aid in both new intervention development and tailoring to the target audience and setting.
No publications are associated with this resource.
- Of the interventions included in this sample, what theoretical or conceptual frameworks are used?
- What are the key findings for trials that assess outcomes related to care partner quality of life?
- Which of the included interventions were tested in racially and ethnically diverse samples?
Interventions included in this table were identified in a series of searches conducted from March 2020 to June 2020 in PubMed, Ovid, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, ProQuest, Web of Science, and in searches of the references of review papers, including meta-analyses and literature reviews. The same searches were performed as an update in August 2022, with results limited to articles published between April 2020 and August 2022. The search terms utilized included the descriptors: dementia, caregiver, intervention, telehealth (telemedicine, telephone, video, internet). Boolean operators “AND” and “OR” were used to perform associations as appropriate.
Inclusion criteria used to select articles for review included:
- Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for family care partners of persons living with dementia
- Interventions for family care partner conducted via telehealth (telephone, video, internet) with at least one synchronous, live session between the interventionist and care partner
- Studies with at least one outcome for care partner
- Studies published in English
- Studies published from 2005-Present
Studies were excluded if the intervention:
- Targeted only the person living with dementia
- Involved a combination of telehealth and in-person sessions
- Lacked live (synchronous) interaction (note: exceptions were for RCTs involving only in-person assessment or initial baseline data collection)
Data included in this iLibrary was extracted from the original data sources mentioned above. It is organized by into three tables: interventions (main table), references, and measures. Users can filter to hone in on interests of concern. A description of each table in the iLibrary is below:
- Intervention Table – Main summary table with details on included interventions. This table contains the following data:
- Description of the intervention including details (when available) on the duration of the intervention, the number of sessions, session length, the care partner-interventionist ratio and the modality of the intervention (telephone, video call, web portal etc.)
- Study sample size
- Racial and ethnic diversity of the study sample. Samples where 75% or less of the participants were identified as non-hispanic, white, were considered “diverse” samples and their demographics extracted and listed. Demographic data was not available for all studies, especially those conducted outside of the United States. In those instances, NO was selected.
- Theoretical or conceptual base for the intervention (where available). Not all listed interventions referenced a theoretical or conceptual basis. To view only those interventions with a cited theoretical or conceptual basis, go to Views and select Theory-based Interventions.
- Measures used to assess care partner outcomes
- Summary of major findings from the study
- Reference Library – Includes all of the reference material for the included interventions.
- Theory Library – Includes references for the theories cited as the basis of included interventions.
- Measures Library – Includes references for the measures used to assess outcomes. Not all measures contained in this library were used by the included interventions. To view only measures used in included interventions go to Views and select Measures Used in Interventions. Classification schema for measures is a modified version of the schema used for the Implementation Core’s iLibrary of Non-Pharmacological Care Partner Interventions for People Living with Dementia Implemented in the United States.
