Technology-based instrumental activities of daily living in persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders

October 10, 2024

IMPACT Career Development Awardee, Andrew Kiselica, PhD, and team examined the applicability and diagnostic accuracy of technology-based iADLs in individuals evaluated for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD).  In the study, 264 care partners of people undergoing comprehensive interdisciplinary evaluations  completed the Functional Activities Questionnaire and 11 technology-based iADL items.

Findings suggest that a range of technologies are used by or impact the lives of people living with dementia. Measurement of these skills can inform how individuals are functioning in a technology-enriched environment. Findings indicate that the assessment of technology-based iADLs provides comparable diagnostic accuracy in identifying individuals with late-life cognitive disorders but refinements of existing iADL measures are needed to validly capture the rapidly evolving technological landscape of those living with ADRD.
