IMPACT CDA Gettel determines that emergency department use peaks before and after dementia diagnosis

Emergency Department Visits Among Patients with Dementia Before and After Diagnosis

IMPACT Career Development Awardee, Cameron Gettel, MD, MHS, and IMPACT member, Ab Brody, PhD, RN, among the authors of the recent publication, Emergency Department Visits Among Patients With Dementia Before and After Diagnosis, which investigates patterns of ED use among people diagnosed with dementia.

The cohort study used data from Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey from 2015-2021 including beneficiaries with an incident diagnosis of dementia. The primary outcome was the rate of monthly ED visits for cases and comparators in the 6 months before and after the date of dementia diagnosis. Findings indicate that having a dementia diagnosis was associated with a 40% increase in the likelihood of having an ED visit.
