IMPACT Design and Statistics Core members Guangyu Tong, Kendra Plourde, Xueqi Wang, Fan Li, and Monica Taljaard are among the authors of a new article which provides valuable insights into the design and analysis methods used in small-scale stepped-wedge cluster randomized trials.
The research team conducted a comprehensive review of 61 SW-CRTs with between 2 and 6 clusters published between 2016–2022. They found that few trials provided explanations for the limited number of clusters, acknowledged the preliminary nature of the evaluation, or discussed the small number of clusters as a limitation in the interpretation of trial results. Based on the findings the team identified several domains for further guidance and methodological development.
