MPACT Pilot Grant Awardee, Donovan Maust, MD, MS, recently conducted a pilot cluster randomized trial to assess a patient nudge and education intervention aimed at reducing central nervous system (CNS)-active polypharmacy in people living with dementia (PLWD).
The study tested the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of using direct-to-patient educational brochures to prompt deprescribing conversations between PLWD and their primary care clinicians. While the outcomes did not show an increase in clinician-patient discussions or reductions in CNS-active polypharmacy, the findings provide valuable insights into the challenges of implementing patient-centered interventions in this space.
