Nonpharmacological Pain Management for People With Dementia: A Scoping Review Mapping Research Gaps From a Pragmatic Lens

Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA – ScR) guidelines, researchers from IMPACT’s Implementation Core screened, collated, extracted and mapped data from eligible studies to the 9 domains of Readiness Assessment for Pragmatic Trials (RAPT) and used descriptive statistics to summarize the studies and the extent to which they reflected readiness for a pragmatic trial.

Eighty-one studies covering 24 interventions were included in the review.  The review reflected a variety of nonpharmacological interventions for pain but gaps in literature that align with the RAPT model and considerations of specific pain and dementia disorders underscore the need for further research efforts in this area.
