Karlawish and Hoffman call for reconsidering visitor bans in long-term care facilities

Opinion: Continued bans on nursing home visitors are unhealthy and unethical

Members of the IMPACT Collaboratory co-authored an opinion piece in the Washington Post calling for long-term care facilities to reconsider visitor bans.

Jason Karlawish, MD, Core Leader of the IMPACT Ethics and Regulation Core and Allison K. Hoffman, JD, a member of the core’s executive committee, joined David C. Grabowski, PhD to author the editorial. They argued that while banning visitors was a sensible early containment strategy, many family members are essential caregivers and care monitors for people living with dementia.
