Health Care System Scholars Program

Health Care System Scholars Program

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) Imbedded Pragmatic Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) Clinical Trials (IMPACT) Collaboratory (U54AG063546) was established in 2019 to expand the nation’s capacity to conduct embedded pragmatic clinical trials (ePCTs) of non-pharmacological interventions embedded within healthcare organizations and systems to improve the care of people living with dementia (PLWD) and their care partners (CPs).

The NIA IMPACT Collaboratory is issuing this call for Health Care Systems (HCS) Scholars. The HCS Scholars program offers researchers an opportunity to partner with healthcare systems to develop ePCTs focused on improving the care provided to PLWD and their CPs. PLWD incur higher costs, require more time during primary care visits, and have more avoidable hospital and emergency department visits. Moreover, providing care to this vulnerable population presents unique challenges within standard practice models. Even when healthcare organizations recognize these challenges, the constant pressures of providing care make it difficult to change the way care is delivered to this population and to overcome system-level issues.

Program Goals

The HCS Scholars Program funds a researcher to partner with a HCS (or organization) for 12 months to:

  1. Develop relationships between the researcher and HCS staff at all levels, from direct care to leaders.
  2. Learn about the HCS: about staff-identified needs for PLWD and CPs; about systems, workflow, and data; and about how HCS implement programs.
  3. Engage HCS staff in exploring ways to improve and/or evaluate dementia care and in learning more about what it means to conduct ePCTs in their setting(s).
  4. Co-develop a research proposal for an IMPACT Pilot or Demonstration project (or other similar NIA funding mechanism) to improve the care of PLWD and CP.
