IMPACT COVID-19 Supplement investigators find effectiveness of a second vaccine booster dose against infection, hospitalization, or death among nursing home residents

Effectiveness of a Second COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Dose Against Infection, Hospitalization, or Death Among Nursing Home Residents — 19 States, March 29–July 25, 2022

September 30, 2022

A new study from the IMPACT COVID-19 Supplement Awardees, supported in part by the National Institute on Aging (U54AG063546-02S2, P01AG027296-11S1) and the Veterans’ Administration Center on Innovation at the Providence Medical Center and reported by the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Review, found that a second vaccine booster was effective against severe outcomes related to COVID-19, such as hospitalization or death, among nursing home residents. Nursing home residents who received their second booster dose were more likely to have additional protection against severe illness compared to those who received only one booster dose after their initial COVID-19 vaccination. IMPACT’s Vincent Mor, PhD is a co-investigator on the award.

Investigators collected data from 196 U.S. community nursing homes from March 22, 2022, to July 25, 2022, to evaluate the vaccine effectiveness of a second mRNA booster dose compared to residents who received a single booster dose. Investigators found that a second booster dose (compared to a first booster) was 74% effective at preventing severe COVID-19 illness leading to hospitalization or death and 90% effective against COVID-19–associated deaths alone.
