Emergency Department Utilization Among Co-Residing Family Caregivers of Persons Living With Dementia

IMPACT Career Development Awardee, Cameron Gettel, MD and team, including Ula Hwang, MD, MPH, and Joan Monin, PhD, MS, describes healthcare utilization patterns of caregivers of people living with dementia (PLWD).

Using data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), this observational cohort study explored the rate of emergency department (ED) visits among caregivers of people living with dementia (PLWD) who lived with the person with dementia compared with matched participants who were not living with their family members with dementia.

Results show that family caregivers co-residing with PLWD had a 30% higher ED visit rate than matched controls not living with family members with dementia.
