Katherine Abbott, PhD, MGS, and team share results from the IMPACT-funded pilot study testing the integration of the Individualized Positive Psychosocial Interaction (IPPI) program into nursing home care for people living with dementia.
Nursing home staff were trained in emotion-focused communication and the delivery of short protocol-guided one-on-one preference-aligned IPPI interactions with 130 residents living with dementia from 7 nursing homes.
Results indicate that the IPPI program is an effective person-centered intervention for people living with dementia in nursing homes which can be integrated into care and improve residents’ moods.
