IMPACT Pilot study shows benefits of person-centered communication training program by Abbott and team

 An Embedded Pragmatic Clinical Trial of the Individualized Positive Psychosocial Interaction (IPPI) Program

Katherine Abbott, PhD, MGS, and team share results from the IMPACT-funded pilot study testing the integration of the Individualized Positive Psychosocial Interaction (IPPI) program into nursing home care for people living with dementia. 

Nursing home staff were trained in emotion-focused communication and the delivery of short protocol-guided one-on-one preference-aligned IPPI interactions with 130 residents living with dementia from 7 nursing homes. 

Results indicate that the IPPI program is an effective person-centered intervention for people living with dementia in nursing homes which can be integrated into care and improve residents’ moods.
