Bio
Kathleen Unroe, MD, MHA, MS, is a geriatrician and nursing home physician. Her research focus is quality of care in nursing homes, and the use of palliative care and hospice in long-term care settings. Dr. Unroe leads NEXT STEPs, an NIA funded U24 to advance clinical trials in nursing home settings. Dr. Unroe is co-PI of an NIA R21/ R33 pragmatic clinical trial to improve advance care planning in nursing homes, co-PI of UPLIFT, a clinical trials of a palliative care model in nursing homes, led OPTIMISTIC, a $30.3 million CMS demonstration project, and was an NIA Beeson K23 scholar. She served as chair of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Research Committee and as chair of the American Geriatrics Society Public Policy Committee. She is an associate editor of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Dr. Unroe completed a three- year geriatric medicine fellowship and internal medicine residency at Duke University. She received her MD, with a specialization in aging, and masters in health administration from Ohio State University.
