Abraham (Ab) Brody, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Assistant Dean for Transformational Excellence in Aging, and the Mathy Mezey Professor of Geriatric Nursing and Professor of Medicine. In this capacity, he leads the robust Aging at Meyers portfolio of geriatrics and palliative care research, education, and external programs. He is also the founder of Aliviado Health, an implementation arm of HIGN focused on implementing high-quality, evidence-based care to support people living with dementia and their care partners. Prof. Brody’s research focuses on developing and testing interventions for people living with dementia and their care partners with a specific focus on embedded pragmatic trials. His work leverages emerging technologies, including precision health and machine learning, to support the healthcare workforce, seriously ill individuals, and their families, and ensures that evidence-based solutions can be implemented effectively in real-world clinical settings.

Katherine (Kate) Courtright MD, MS, is an assistant professor of medicine and core faculty at the Palliative and Advanced Illness Research (PAIR) Center at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia. She is a critical care and palliative medicine physician and health services researcher. Her research focuses on optimizing the implementation and outcomes of palliative care delivery for individuals with serious illness, particularly those in the hospital. Dr. Courtright has been a principal investigator on multiple federally funded large, pragmatic clinical trials evaluating the real-world effectiveness and implementation context of clinician nudges to improve the frequency, timing, and quality of palliative care. She was a recipient of the 2022 Early Career Investigator Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the 2025 Top 20 Research Achievement Award from the Clinical Research Forum. Her research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.

Jennifer Gabbard, MD, is an associate professor of internal medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and directs the Serious Illness and Palliative Medicine Research Program. A board-certified geriatrician and palliative care physician, she has additional training in implementation science and health services research. Her work centers on improving care for seriously ill older adults—especially those with dementia, frailty, and unmet social needs—by integrating palliative care, shared decision-making, and social determinants into primary care. Dr. Gabbard leads NIH and foundation-funded studies, including pragmatic trials on advance care planning, telehealth, and technology-enabled interventions for people with cognitive impairment. Her research, published in JAMA and Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, informs scalable models of dementia care. She is funded by an NIH–NIA K23 Career Development Award and co-site PI of the PCORI-funded SPIRE trial. An active member of the NIA IMPACT Collaboratory, she contributes to national initiatives on dementia care and Age-Friendly Health Systems and mentors early-career investigators in geriatrics and palliative care.

Nicholas (Nick) Pajewski, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Data Science at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, where he co-directs the CTSA Health Informatics Program and a research center on health system sciences. Dr. Pajewski is a biostatistician and clinical trialist with experience in large, multi-site randomized trials, largely focused on pharmacologic management of common chronic diseases in older adults. He was the primary faculty biostatistician for the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial’s (SPRINT) cognitive component (SPRINT MIND) and is currently a member of the Data Coordinating Center and Steering Committee for the Pragmatic Evaluation of evENTs And Benefits of Lipid-lowering in oldEr adults (PREVENTABLE) trial. Dr. Pajewski’s research also centers around leveraging the electronic health record (EHR) for health services research and population health, with a particular focus on applications of the deficit accumulation model of frailty.

Quincy Samus, PhD, is a professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing with a joint appointment in the School of Medicine. She is the director of the Memory and Aging Services Innovation Center and associate director of the Innovation & Implementation Center for Aging. She is trained in applied gerontology, epidemiology, and health services research and has 20 years of experience leading projects to develop innovation to improve care for older people living with memory challenges and their families. She has an extensive track record of interdisciplinary collaboration with across many settings to address dementia care and risk reduction. She has successfully pioneered the development, testing and dissemination of evidence-based care management innovations and models of care to improve the coordination of care among people living with dementia. Kathleen Unroe, MD, MHA, MS, is a geriatrician and nursing home physician. Her research focus is quality of care in nursing homes, and the use of palliative care and hospice in long-term care settings. Dr. Unroe leads NEXT STEPs, an NIA funded U24 to advance clinical trials in nursing home settings. Dr. Unroe is co-PI of an NIA R21/ R33 pragmatic clinical trial to improve advance care planning in nursing homes, co-PI of UPLIFT, a clinical trials of a palliative care model in nursing homes, led OPTIMISTIC, a $30.3 million CMS demonstration project, and was an NIA Beeson K23 scholar. She served as chair of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Research Committee and as chair of the American Geriatrics Society Public Policy Committee. She is an associate editor of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Dr. Unroe completed a three- year geriatric medicine fellowship and internal medicine residency at Duke University. She received her MD, with a specialization in aging, and masters in health administration from Ohio State University.
