Heather Allore, PhD, founded the field of gerontological biostatistics to help researchers have the tools necessary to understand how to design and analyze research relevant and important to the lives and well-being of older adults. Led by Dr. Allore, the Design and Statistics Core connects these methods to all aspects of the IMPACT Collaboratory. She is the leader of the Data Management and Statistics Core of the Yale Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Dr. Allore previously served as Director of Biostatistics at the Yale Program on Aging. Jeffrey Burns, MD, MS, is a neurologist and the Edward H. Hashinger Professor and co-director of the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (KU ADRC), one of 35 nationally designated centers in the country. Dr. Burns also directs his department’s neurocognitive division and the KU ADRC’s Clinical Core, which is a site for national clinical trial networks. Dr. Burns started the Alzheimer’s clinical research program at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2004. His education includes a BA (English and Japanese) from the University of Notre Dame, medical school at the University of Kansas Medical Center, neurology residency at the University of Virginia, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Alzheimer’s at Washington University in St. Louis. He then returned to his hometown of Kansas City to start the Alzheimer’s clinical program to stimulate and support AD and aging research locally while investigating how various lifestyle factors influence brain aging and AD. The program has grown into a vibrant research and training environment for AD and brain aging research. Dr. Burns has been continuously funded as a PI by the NIH since 2005 for his work.

Katherine (Kate) Courtright MD, MS, is an assistant professor of medicine and core faculty at the Palliative and Advanced Illness Research (PAIR) Center at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia. She is a critical care and palliative medicine physician and health services researcher. Her research focuses on optimizing the implementation and outcomes of palliative care delivery for individuals with serious illness, particularly those in the hospital. Dr. Courtright has been a principal investigator on multiple federally funded large, pragmatic clinical trials evaluating the real-world effectiveness and implementation context of clinician nudges to improve the frequency, timing, and quality of palliative care. She was a recipient of the 2022 Early Career Investigator Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the 2025 Top 20 Research Achievement Award from the Clinical Research Forum. Her research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.
