Bio:David Gifford, MD, MPH, is Senior Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), the largest association in the country representing assisted living communities and skilled nursing centers. He helped create the department which assists providers in their quality improvement efforts and works with Administration officials on regulations and policies, including improving care for people living with dementia and reducing off-label antipsychotic medication use in this population. Dr. Gifford collaborates closely with Brown faculty on pragmatic trials, helping to identify, prioritize, and implement studies that rigorously test interventions to improve care for older adults. He received his MD from Case Western and conducted his geriatric fellowship at UCLA, where he also earned his MPH. Previously, he was CMO at a non-profit quality improvement agency, where he directed Medicare’s national nursing home quality improvement initiative, and Director of the Rhode Island State Department of Health, where he received the National Governor’s award for Distinguished Service Award for State Officials.
