A new article in The Gerontologist co-authored by NIA IMPACT members Lauren J. Parker and Fayron Epps, calls for greater clarity and consistency in how researchers define and describe culturally informed dementia caregiving interventions.
The authors describe how cultural factors can contribute to disparities in caregiving experiences and outcomes yet are often inconsistently incorporated into dementia care interventions.
The article clarifies commonly used terms such as cultural tailoring and cultural adaptation and provides examples of evidence-based dementia caregiving programs that have incorporated culturally informed approaches. The authors note that a lack of specificity in terminology can make it difficult to evaluate, replicate, and expand effective interventions.
The authors conclude that culturally informed interventions may help address disparities in dementia care outcomes and offer best practices for advancing the science of dementia caregiving research.
