Research by team including IMPACT members Vince Mor and Ellen McCarthy explores the varied uptake of the  coadministered COVID/influenza vaccines during the pandemic

COVID-19 and influenza vaccine coadministration among older U.S. adults

February 23, 2024

IMPACT’s Multiple principal investigator Vincent Mor, PhD, and executive director Ellen McCarthy, PhD, MPH, are among the authors of an American Journal of Preventive Medicine article exploring COVID/influenza vaccine coadministration between 2021-2022. The study included community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries ages 66 years old and older who received a mRNA COVID-19 booster vaccine.

The research revealed that vaccination for both COVID and influenza were high for Medicare beneficiaries, however, administering the two vaccines together on the same day was low. Vaccine coadministration increased for study participants from 11.1% to 36.5% between study periods. Beneficiaries with dementia and in rural counties were more likely to receive coadministered vaccines, while those with cancer were less likely. The authors conclude that future work should explore which factors explain variation in the decision to receive coadministered vaccines.
