Bio
Justin Clapp, PhD, MPH, is a linguistic and medical anthropologist who uses qualitative methods and anthropological theory to examine issues in healthcare communication, medical decision making, and empirical bioethics. Much of his work examines treatment decision-making in perioperative contexts (surgery, anesthesia, intensive care) with the goal of developing models of decision-making better tailored to the intricacies of clinician-patient interaction. He uses social scientific theory and method to study ethical issues related to medical research, such as how laypersons should be incorporated into exception from informed consent (EFIC) research and how institutional review boards (IRBs) justify their authority. Dr. Clapp teaches courses in anthropology and qualitative methods, and collaborates with investigators across the Perelman School of Medicine and elsewhere on qualitative projects. He received his PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and his MPH from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.
