Plan switching among Medicare Advantage beneficiaries with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias

Plan switching among Medicare Advantage beneficiaries with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias

March 23, 2021

A paper presenting results from a study in which researchers used hospital, outpatient, and post‐acute care data to identify MA beneficiaries with and without ADRD in 2014. Multinomial logit models estimated the percentage of people who disenrolled to traditional Medicare (TM) or switched to a different MA plan in 2015. Read the full article here.

Building Skills to Conduct Embedded Pragmatic Clinical Trials for People Living with Dementia and their Care Partners

Wednesday, January 25th, 2023  |  11:00am - 3:30pm ET
Thursday, January 26th, 2023  |  11:00am - 5:00pm ET

Apply here!

This year’s modules will focus on:

  • Using real-world data to identify PLWD and ascertain outcomes in ePCTs
  • Designing the implementation evaluation for an ePCT
  • Defining a pilot: What is a pilot study for an ePCT?

The IMPACT Collaboratory will hold our third annual Training Workshop on January 25-26, 2023 entitled Building Skills to Conduct Embedded Pragmatic Clinical Trials (ePCTs) among People Living with Dementia (PLWD) and their Care Partners. This 1.5-day virtual workshop features all new material to build a foundation in practical aspects of designing and conducting ePCTs in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD). The workshop will include a combination of activities including: panel discussions, small group sessions, and networking opportunities with experts in the field.

We are inviting applications from early to mid-stage researchers who seek to develop competence in designing and conducting ePCTs of non-pharmacological interventions embedded in health care systems for PLWD and care partners.

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Transmit knowledge about designing and conducting ePCTs among PLWD and care partners in health care systems that integrates considerations related to identifying PLWD and ascertaining pragmatic outcomes
  • Problem-solve common challenges in designing and conducting ePCTs for PLWD and care partners
  • Apply the acquired knowledge to move their current and future research in ePCTs forward, including applying for competitive funding

Successful applicants will be expected to complete selected readings and online training prior to the workshop. All participants are expected to attend and participate in the entire 1.5-day event.

  • Hold a full-time position at an academic or research organization in the United States
  • Early-stage investigators pursuing careers conducting ePCTs in AD/ADRD
  • Mid-career investigators seeking to pursue research on ePCTs in AD/ADRD

Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Selection Criteria: Applicants will be selected based on their demonstrated commitment to improving care of PLWD and/or their care partners through the conduct of ePCTs in HCS and the potential impact of the workshop on promoting the applicant’s career in this area.

NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory and Living Textbook

The NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory aims to improve the way clinical trials are conducted by creating a new infrastructure for collaborative research with healthcare systems, ultimately ensuring that healthcare providers and patients can make decisions based on the best available clinical evidence. The Collaboratory supports the design and rapid execution of pragmatic clinical trial Demonstration Projects to address questions of major public health importance and engage healthcare delivery systems in research partnerships. The Collaboratory also provides training resources on how to design, conduct, and disseminate embedded pragmatic clinical trials (ePCTs).

LTC Focus

LTCFocus.org provides data on nursing home care in the US. Their goal is to allow researchers to trace relationships between state policies, local market forces, and the quality of long-term care, enabling policymakers to craft state and local guidelines that promote high-quality, cost-effective, equitable care for older Americans.

IMPACT Collaboratory members participate in AcademyHealth Conference

The NIA IMPACT Collaboratory was part of a pre-conference workshop and several presentations shared during the 2022 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting held June 4-7, 2022 in Washington, DC.

IMPACT Multiple Principal Investigator Vince Mor, PhD spoke on a panel during the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory Rethinking Clinical Trials‘ “Essentials of Embedded Pragamtic Clinical Trials” Pre-Conference Workshop. Dr. Mor participated in the panel, ePCTs in Context: Panel Discussion with Collaboratory Demonstration Project PIs.

Dr. Mor also participated in two panels during the conference, including NASEM Recommendations to Improve Nursing Home Quality: A Discussion of the 2022 Report, which shared the main findings and recommendations from the 2020 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine expert panel to examine our nation’s approach to nursing home care. The report includes recommendations for improving quality of care in today’s nursing homes. Dr. Mor was among four panelists to discuss the report.

Dr. Mor also spoke at the closing plenary session of the annual meeting, Connecting Science, Management, and Policy for More Timely and Relevant HSR. The plenary examined how to better connect health services and policy research together with evidence-based management in health systems. Dr. Mor and others addressed whether we are responding accurately and quickly enough as a field to ongoing challenges in service delivery.

Dr. Mor and Ellen McCreedy, PhD, MPH, member of the executive committee for the Technical Data Core, both also contributed to eight poster sessions during the annual meeting.
